Today's Meeting

Attendance

Counting a major number of make-ups, our empty four tables (in back) were hidden in the smoke of a 70% attendance announcement. President-elect Trip presided again, and announced that with no piano player and no song leader we would forego singing. It was noticeable there were more dampened spirits than exuberance. Gertrude apologized for a long prayer but I hadn’t even shifted to the other foot when it ended. It was after all a special day to tack on all kinds of “thanks” to the good Lord. Sgt@Arms Tony Q gathered a respectable pile of happy dollars, but none came in from those four tables.

Shelter Box Barometer:  With today’s happy dollars dedicated to our 4th Shelter Box we have $639 of that next thousand, getting real close to two-thirds,

Visitors

Today again there were no visiting Rotarians. Shannon Price was guest of her mom, Sandy, Mike Mickler was was guest of David Page, Wayne DuBois guest of his special other, Janice O’Connell, Harrison and Adam Garnett family guests of Jen Towles and Bradley Bean guest of his dad, Aaron.

Business/Announcements

(1) Aaron Bean shared a lot of details about the Christmas Tree Lighting at The Ritz that evening, AND nearly sold out on the raffle ticket he brought with him.

(2) I’m sure we will still get a more official report on the tennis tournament, but those who worked it testified to the good time they had and even though we didn’t make bundles of dough, Katie shared that we did get $752. Since tickets were $10, I’m not sure if the $2 came from interest or depreciation. It’s hard to tell these days.

(3) Mike Clemens filled us in on more details with the Water Project special trip to Nicaragua. Let him know if you want more info or you’d like to go. He said so far the Sunrise Club is sort of driving this; they have 7 going so far. Our club currently has 2. The trip will be Feb 10-15 and will cost somewhere around $1,500-2,000. More information will be coming.

(4) It wasn’t brought up at the meeting, but we hope you saw our TWO picture day in the News Leader last Wed.

Our Program Today

With this being Rotary Foundation Month we were treated to a video of one of the Foundation’s most major projects, End Polio Now. I personally can still remember when we really got going to eradicate polio in the mid 1980’s. In the last twenty plus years we almost had it licked more than once, but as the video pointed out, you have to stay aggressively on top of it until there are NO more cases and even then, for a safe period of time. Over 2 billion children have been treated again and again and we are now down to four cases. Relax and it will all unravel. We have also learned that dosing, like three times, is not a one time thing like it was here in the States. Throughout south India most have required seven doses and there are some places that have needed 17-18 doses, worst in Pradesh, India. 136 million are being treated there weekly. Local Rotary Clubs play a big part in providing the organization and volunteer Rotarians from all over the globe work within the organization provided. The effort has been massive.

The Second Part of our program was taking the time to go around the room and allow everyone to express what they are most thankful for.

CHECK OUT the new Website Directory

All of the photos taken and information or personal bio’s that were turned in are now part of the New Directory on the new website. That is THE Directory; we are not going to print it in hard copy. The new website will keep everything current, easy for any of us to use, and never go out-of-date unless we individually let it. Don’t like your picture? Your information is wrong or incomplete? YOU are now able to edit your own personal information (even photo) on the new website. Look for instructions there about how to do it, but if you have a problem or question, all you have to do is send an email to Don Stephenson stephendon@msn.com and he will help you with it. We will also still take your picture if it hasn’t been taken, OR if you want a different picture than the one that appears now, just let Ron Price know QEDron@aol.com and he will work with you.
